- stalwart of Britain's Royal Ballet during its flourishing in
- the '40s and '50s, Somes was a peerless interpreter of Frederick
- Ashton's choreography. Handsome and noble, he was at his best
- as a partner, burnishing the beauty of Margot Fonteyn during
- their long career together (1950-1961). Ever self-effacing,
- he once remarked that to him the point of dancing was to be
- on the same stage with Fonteyn.
