  16. stalwart of Britain's Royal Ballet during its flourishing in
  17. the '40s and '50s, Somes was a peerless interpreter of Frederick
  18. Ashton's choreography. Handsome and noble, he was at his best
  19. as a partner, burnishing the beauty of Margot Fonteyn during
  20. their long career together (1950-1961). Ever self-effacing,
  21. he once remarked that to him the point of dancing was to be
  22. on the same stage with Fonteyn.
